Worrying crime growth

Cllr Vernon Pillay of Stanger writes:

Carte Blanche this past Sunday night alluded to how USA reacted to the release of SA’s crime statistics and how tourism will be impacted, and we need take cognizance.

According to SAPS stats on their website, nationally murder cases stand at an all-time high of 20 336, up 6,9 percent.

Stock theft is the highest with 28 849 cases or an increase of 7,2 percent.

Driving under the influence stands at 86 160 versus 75 030 last year with an increase of 11 130 cases. The need for autonomous vehicles and Uber should be in demand.

Drug related cases up from 292 689 to 323 547 is very disconcerting because the biggest user base is the youth.

Illegal possession of firearms increased by 1 424 cases, to 17 558 this year. Locally all manner of drug anomalies, carjacking, brazen robbery and more has affected the KwaDukuza CBD and its suburbs.

The emotional and psychological effects are affecting our humanity. The people are tired of being robbed or hearing of all manner of robberies.

The following letter appeared in the North Coast Courier (21 September 2018) in print. The above content was then enhanced for SEO.
